About Passerby

The Shibuya Crossing, also known as “The Scramble” in Tokyo, is well-known as the busiest street in the world. When the traffic lights turn red, an observer can watch thousands of people cross the intersection from all directions. As a result, it’s not unusual for tourists to feel overwhelmed by the crowds – especially when many colorful signs from the surrounding buildings also compete for the eye’s attention. So, it’s no surprise the Japanese revere open spaces like parks and gardens with reverence. Cherry trees in particular are richly symbolic. The transience of the blossoms and the volatility of their exquisite beauty, has often been associated with the graceful acceptance of destiny, mortality and karma.

Lyrics by Ryan Lucas

Above the neon lights
You rise to greater heights
In a vortex of kinetic energy
While beneath the sky
I am your passerby
Standing transfixed
With a crowd surrounding me

So if I never smile
It’s cause I’m in denial
Of what the naked eye can see
Although you’ve captured beauty
It’s every skeptic’s duty
To question immortality

Tokyo

Despite my fascination
With chic Shibuya Station
My one true love is history
Whose tender flower blossoms
Beyond the chill of autumn
While I must face reality

So if I never smile
It’s cause I’m in denial
Of what the naked eye can see
Although you’ve captured beauty
It’s every skeptic’s duty
To question immortality
